Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, who leads the Roman Catholic Church in Austria, has apparently confirmed that an openly homosexual man may serve on the parish council at a church in Stutzenhofen – a town in the Weinviertel region.
Florian Stangl was elected to the advisory post by members of the congregation, but apparently did not find approval on the part of his pastor, Rev. Gerhard Swierzek.
Stangl and his companion resorted to asking for a personal interview with Cardinal Schonborn, who then spoke with the pair and dined with them. According to Austrian daily Die Presse, Cardinal Schonborn decided that Stangl should not be excluded from the position, but the decision was not made public until March 30. Rev. Swierzek, who had opposed the homosexual Stangl, has since received death threats. Gasoline is said to have been poured through a window at his rectory, while a local newspaper reported that there was a rumour that the priest had left on vacation.

The report above is not entirely clear, stating that Cardinal Schonborn has ”apparently” confirmed that Stangl may serve. German language reports out of Austria make it clear that this is in fact so:
Die Erzdiözese Wien erhebt keinen Einspruch gegen die am 18. März durchgeführte Pfarrgemeinderatswahl in der Weinviertler Pfarre Stützenhofen und bestätigt deren Ergebnis. Die Wahl hatte für Aufsehen gesorgt, da ein 26-Jähriger in den Pfarrgemeinderat gewählt wurde, der in einer eingetragenen Partnerschaft mit einem Mann lebt. Wie die Erzdiözese am Freitagnachmittag nach Beratung mitteilte, wird die Wahl bestätigt. Man habe im Bischofsrat “den komplexen Fall Stützenhofen eingehend beraten” und den Beschluss “einhellig gefasst”. Zugleich gibt der Bischofsrat den Auftrag, “in der Pfarrgemeinderatsordnung die Voraussetzungen für eine Kandidatur im Kontext weitergehender Überlegungen zu Wesen und Aufgabe des Pfarrgemeinderats präziser zu fassen”.
Der Wiener Erzbischof, Kardinal Christoph Schönborn, erklärte zudem wörtlich in der Pressemitteilung: “Ich danke allen Menschen, die durch ihre Kandidatur bei den Pfarrgemeinderatswahlen gezeigt haben, dass ihnen die Kirche und der Glaube ein großes Anliegen sind. Sie bezeugen damit die Lebendigkeit der Kirche. In ihrer Vielfalt spiegelt sich die Vielfalt heutiger Lebens- und Glaubenswege. So gibt es auch unter den Pfarrgemeinderäten viele, deren Lebensentwürfe nicht in allem den Idealen der Kirche entsprechen. Im Blick auf ihr jeweiliges Lebenszeugnis in seiner Gesamtheit und auf ihr Bemühen um ein Leben aus dem Glauben, freut sich die Kirche über ihr Engagement. Damit stellt sie die Ideale nicht in Frage.

I’m glad I read the rest of the Cutting Edge report.
His priest, the Rev. Swierzek, seems most put out by being over-ruled by the Cardinal, and went beserk at the newspaper’s office, demanding a retraction and threatening legal action.
The diocese Vicar General (a kind of Head of Personnel for the priests) had to go and calm him down.
I especially like the Cardinal sitting Florian and his partner down to dinner to sort it all out.
That’s showing some of the ‘respect, compassion and understanding’ the Catechism tells us we deserve. Full credit to the Cardinal.
